Last week, I had the opportunity to travel to Hawaiʻi Island to present HDOT’s Hawaiʻi District with a 2025 Perpetual Pavement Award: By Performance. The award recognizes an eight-mile section of Route 11, Volcano Road/Māmalahoa Highway, commonly referred to as Hawaii Belt Road, between Mileposts 24 and 32. It is Hawaiʻi’s third Perpetual Pavement Award—and the story behind the road is almost as interesting as the award itself.
This month’s newsletter focuses on perpetual pavements. Our feature article celebrates Hawai’i’s latest Perpetual Pavement Award, our Featured Video explores how to design a perpetual pavement, our Website of the Month stresses the importance of pavement preservation in ensuring long life of a road, and our Industry Article of the Month gives us a glimpse into other recent contributions from the Asphalt Pavement Alliance, the organization that grants Perpetual Pavement Awards.
