Balanced Mix Design (BMD) Implementation
HDOT continues to make progress on BMD implementation. National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) has completed testing of eight of the ten Hawaii mixes in their lab. The tests conducted were IDEAL-CT, IDEAL-RT, and Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test (HWTT).
The next steps are to:
- Complete NCAT’s testing of the last two Hawai‘i mixes currently in their lab.
- For IDEAL-CT, evaluate whether 95mm specimens should be tested, as thicker specimens may require fewer gyrations and be more practical to implement
- Determine which test(s) to use moving forward (IDEAL-RT vs. Hamburg), as both test results indicate rutting potential.
Updates are provided via HAPI’s monthly report to the Friends of the Hawaii BMD Implementation. If you would like to become a friend of the implementation, please contact Sara Thomas with your email address at sara@hawaiiasphalt.org.
